"I think I’ve found a solution, thanks to memcached and in particular the incr command. incr lets you atomically increment an already existing counter, simply by specifying its key. add can be used to create that counter—it will fail silently if the provided key already exists. Let’s say we want to limit a user to 10 hits every minute. A naive implementation would be to create a memcached counter for hits from that user’s IP address in a specific minute. The counter key might look like this: ratelimit_72.26.203.98_2009-01-07-21:45 Increment that counter for every hit, and if it exceeds 10 block the request."
"Leave it to Apple (AAPL) to turn the lifting of restrictions into a profit center. If users convert every one of the 9 billion songs purchased from the iTunes Store over the past six years, a rich new revenue stream will flow toward Cupertino. Techcrunch’s Erick Schonfeld calls it Apple’s “$1.8 billion music tax.”"
"AOL is shutting down Ficlets on January 15, and in their infinite corporate wisdom and understanding of how communities on the Internet work, they're not providing any easy way to archive the stories you've written there beyond advising that you try "copying the text and pasting it into a plain text or Word document." Right. That's going to be really fun and easy for people who have written dozens of Ficlets. [::facepalm::]"
The Mozilla Tree
Behind Firefox is Mozilla, and behind Mozilla is a community. And the Mozilla community acts a lot like an ecosystem, which can be visualized as a kind of living tree—not to confused with the mozilla-central tree. Oh yeah, and Mozilla is the name of both a Foundation and a Corporation.
Confused yet? If not, then we should talk so you can explain it to me, because it all looks pretty tangly and intertwingled to me. Nonetheless, it seems to work, and produces a good chunk of my favorite software and technologies.
So, after all that, I suppose the thing to do for a new year is to figure out what’s next, maybe compose some disposable resolutions for the coming months. Well, here are some off the top of my head:
It’s been a busy 3 years or so.
Yes, this promises to be one of those posts I seem to keep writing. It’s not quite LiveJournal material, but it’ll be completely devoid of code or any notable geekery—so feel free to move along.
In late 2005 to early 2006, after a busy and stressful Autoshow season working at Organic, I finished a book on del.icio.us. Meanwhile, the girl and I prepared for a wedding and a honeymoon in San Francisco. Unexpectedly, I got offered a job at Yahoo! a month or so before getting married. We got married on June 9, 2006. We had a honeymoon in San Francisco. Then, less than a month after that, we moved to Santa Clara and I started at Yahoo! working on del.icio.us.
The Washing Machine That Ate My Sari: Mistakes in Cross-Cultural Design is a fascinating article about making cross-culturally sensitive products for the Indian market. The title refers to how the Whirlpool company's introduction of the World Washer into India proved to be a financial disaster, because a millimeter gap between the washer's agitator and its drum ended up shredding most traditional Indian clothing. You can also read about how the Indian preference for warm milk at breakfast turned Kellogg's corn flakes into a big flop in India.

In an alarming development with wide-reaching implications for America's safety, Department of Homeland Security head Michael Chertoff and CIA Director Michael Hayden issued a joint report Monday warning that the next 9/11 could in fact occur on an altogether different date.
I love the layout of the latest rev of Twhirl, but for FriendFeed I see lots of redundant "no comments yet" and "no likes yet" lines repeating down the window and taking up space to reduce the number of events I can scan in one pageful. I'd like it better if these were compacted up as side-by-side @ and [heart] buttons in the avatar / name / time bar for each event. Then, only show the in-context replies and likes when there's something to show.
Looks like the RSS feed is missing user names, for my account (lmorchard) at least. The links and GUIDs look like this for me: http://bkkeepr.com/people//record/669
