This is a really charming place. The service was excellent (we went with four young children). The staff was very friendly. I had the lamb struedel and it was super! SW VA is blessed to have some really good local food and wine. It gave me a very satisfied feeling to eat here.

At a special event (Local Foods Celebration for the Virginia Highlands Festival), they seated a full restaurant at the same time.  The menu naturally was limited, but this situation is where you see the quality not only of the food but also the wait staff.  There weren't many, but they were incredibly efficient.  No one had to wait an overly long time for food, and drinks were kept full.

This is on top of the local food emphasis and high quality.  Gazpacho with truly fresh vegetables.  Meat you can almost meet.  Good stuff.

Oh, and the candy orange slices you can find in the adjacent Meadowview Farmers' Guild (general store) are GREAT!

This place is a gem.  If you are in the area, I don't think you'll find better local food.  I grew up 17 miles away and Meadowview barely registered on my radar.  I had to consult a map to figure out where it was.  It's a tiny little community and it probably has my favorite place to eat in SW VA!

The place is not fancy but the food was delicious.  I had a butternut squash burrito that I thought was excellent.  My wife had the quiche which she thought was good but not great.  Two other's in our party had the beef stew for which they gave rave reviews.  Another had the pizza from the wood fire oven which looked wonderful -- I forgot to ask how she liked it.

The deserts were a squash pie (think pumpkin pie) and an apple crumb pie.  They were absolutely fantastic.

OK, I'm not talking Michelin 3-star gourmet cooking but this is what I would almost call gourmet down-home cooking.  They only use fresh local ingredients which, by nature of being "fresh", are only those that are in season.

The decor is simple and the adjacent market is a mix of general store and local craft house.  There really isn't much else in Meadowview but if you're driving by the one-and-only exit this is the must-eat place in the area.  It's just half mile or so off I-81.  Sure there are plenty of fast-food and chain restaurants at exits down the road but this is the way food was meant to be prepared and enjoyed.

Treat yourself.  Every town should have a local restaurant of this caliber.

Definitely a find if you are in this part of the country. Everything is local and seasonal, even the wine, beer and soda. I had a pasta with spring veggies and it was delicious. The cheese plate rocked, and the carrot cake was almost as good as my Nana's. Plus, our waiter was really friendly and handled our large and slightly silly group without missing a beat. Entrees are in the $14 to $20ish range and wine was $5 a glass, so it was pretty reasonable. Also there's a general store attached where you can find lots of cool local items.

All the food is local (or as close as possible) and seasonal. A great time was had by all, and the food was amazingly flavorful and fresh. Nicest of all was that we kept finding ingredients that you just don't normally find in restaurant food -- because typical restaurant's don't bother using quirky local produce. For example, I'd not expect to find lamb sausage in a burrito.

Looking forward to going back and enjoying whatever's in season once my wallet has recovered.

The Harvest Table Restaurant is a gem of a place for Appalachia. Owned by the author Barbara Kingsolver, Harvest Table's menu is composed entirely of locally grown meats and produce, along with local beers and wines. Combine this with a cozy, down-home environment, and you have yourself a winner, especially if you're from Northern California and enjoy this style of cooking. I ordered the meat loaf, which was just ok, but was able to sample the grilled pork chop, which was delicious. The cheese plate was also really great, as were the dilly beans, which are a local delicacy and very tasty. All in all, a great place to have dinner if you find yourself in this neck of the woods, or just passing through on Interstate 81.
